Struggle of Unionists for Right to Existence

Struggle of Unionists for Right to Existence

More than 16,000 railway unionists of south Korea launched an indefinite strike for the right to existence on November 26.

The Korean Rail Workers’ Union which had held several rounds of negotiations with the managements for the restoration of the dismissed workers, wage hike and other issues began the strike after the Railway Corporation totally rejected their demands and annulled the agreements with the union.

In solidarity with them many local headquarters in Seoul, Busan, Daejeon, Suncheon, Youngju and other areas conducted full-scale struggle, thus the struggle of the railway unionists spread across south Korea.

The strikers exposed that the Railway Corporation resorted to illegal actions such as appeasing the workers not to take part in the strike, stating that the current struggle is the eruption of the indignation toward the managements who rendered the agreements gained by the workers’ blood, sweat and sacrifice dead-paper, and a struggle to defend the union from all sorts of unreasonable suppression.

They demonstrated their will of struggle chanting slogans such as “Stop the business restructuring!”, “Implement the labor-management agreements!”, “The railway to the people!” and “We will never give up to the suppression”.

On November 28 over 12,000 unionists affiliated with the Public Transportation League of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the public sectors league of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions held in Seoul a solidarity rally to demand the authorities repeal the anti-worker policy.

Prior to that, the Kyeonggnam headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions held a rally in Changweon for securing the basic rights of workers, frustrating the dismissal and opposing the legislation for privatizing medical service.

The south Korean authorities mercilessly suppress the righteous struggle of the workers for defending the rights of labor and existence by mobilizing security forces, branding it as “illegal” far from accepting their just demands.

Though the regime often publicized that it pursues the policy for ordinary people, it has done nothing but pro-business policy only for a handful of the conglomerates.

From the outset of the current regime the number of the unemployed is on steady increase and the wage of those who hardly keep their job is incessantly falling, triggering a great anger among different social strata.

All the facts show that the anti-people nature of the regime can never change.

The south Korean workers should vigorously wage the struggle to gain their rights and interests, never harboring

KCTU Launches Anti-"government" Struggle

KCTU Launches Anti-"government" Struggle

Pyongyang, December 11 (KCNA) -- The south Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) kicked off an anti-"government" struggle across south Korea on Dec. 8 in protest against the suppression of the labor movement.

The organization held a rally in Seoul for "denouncing the collusion behind the closed doors, defending democratic unions and forcing the regime step down".

Participants in the rally accused the south Korean Ministry of Labor, the Federation of south Korean Trade Unions and the "General Association of Korean Businessmen" of "agreeing" on Dec. 4 on the "amendment to the Law on Trade Unions" the keynote of which calls for banning the payment of wages to full-time officials of trade unions, etc.

They charged that their collusion was aimed to trample down upon the rights of workers and block the activities of trade unions.

They declared trade unions in various fields under the KCTU would launch anti- "government" actions one after another with the rally as a prelude.

They also stated that they would simultaneously hold mass rallies across south Korea on Dec. 19, in particular, in an effort to escalate their actions.

The regional headquarters of the KCTU in different areas such as Taegu, Pusan and Ulsan launched sit-in strikes in protest against the authorities' moves to crack down upon the labor movement on the same day.

Corruptness of South Korean Society

Corruptness of South Korean Society

South Korea is a mammonish society where money and power are almighty, a society where the law of the jungle prevails, and a decadent society where all sorts of crimes such as swindle and fraud, killing and robbery, and human traffic are rampant.

- Uninterrupted Crimes

In 2008 1,966,000 cases of different crimes were committed in south Korea, 7.6% more than that of the previous year.

In 2008 the murder increased by 5.6%, robbery by 8.3%, sex violence by 4.1%, assault and other crimes of violence by 32.7%, and in particular the number of the young criminals of violence by 15.4% in comparison with 2007.

More than 1.54 million cases of living-related crimes occurred in 2008, among which the larcenies increased by 11.3% and the fraud and criminal negligence by more than 30% as compared with that of 2007.

In 2008 49,631 cases of arson were committed (3.7% more than 47,882 cases of 2007).

81.2% of them were deliberate crimes and arsons by young people increased by 65.5%.

- Employment Crisis

At present the completely unemployed are 3.77 million and 5,200 jobs are reduced every day. Jobless people will increase more than those in the period of the financial crisis in 1997 owing to the mass dismissal by the business “restructuring”.

Now in south Korea one fourth of the population are unemployed or underemployed.

2.6 million families have householders with no job and even the employed are suffering from the phobia about unemployment.

Owing to the anti-people policy of the treacherous Lee Myung-bak regime, deteriorating economy and rampant social ills, the people's living fall into misery more and more and various crimes prevail.

This is the reality of south Korea today.

To ten million workers

To ten million workers

Dear ten million south Korean workers!

Now south Korea is indignant over the south Korean authorities and the vicious conglomerate that forced death to Park Jong-tae, a head of Gwangju branch of transportation solidarity headquarter under the Korean Confederation of Trade Union.

He, unable to bear the inhumane measure and suppression of the trade union by the Daehan Tongun that in league with the Lee Myung-bak regime, closed his life on May 3.

His sorrowful death was a murder produced by the present regime and the vicious conglomerate that seriously violates the rights and liberty of the working class and a tragedy of an abnormal reality of south Korea.

Lee, who had advocated “the economy for the people” and “stable employment”, threw away his commitments after he took presidency and stimulated avarice and arbitrariness of the handful conglomerate and the privileged class with policy favorable for them, while ignoring the lives of the working people.

The Kumho group and its underling Daehan Tonghun totally cancelled a raise of transportation fee 30 won agreed with the part-workers and dismissed 78 workers demanding the agreement; moreover, they ruthlessly suppressed them by mobilizing the riot police.

Demanding the higher wages cannot be a guilt and target of suppression.

Park sacrificed his life to indict the abnormal reality of south Korea where the haves violate the haves-not, power and money is rampant and injustice prevails over justice.

The Lee regime, instead of apologizing the crime, impeded his funeral ceremony.

The working masses would suffer misfortune and disaster as long as the Lee regime’s policy against the workers and suppression remain intact.

The Lee regime’s policies against the workers and people are more pronounced as it drove the ten million workers to precipice of death.

Now the Lee clique and the ruling Grand National Party made the millions of workers jobless and tries to fabricate murderous labor law that allows the handful capitalist class to dismiss the workers, cut wages and violate the rights of work at random.

Backed by the Lee clique, the conglomerates dismissed millions of workers under the signboard of the economic debacle by launching “restructuring” and “lay offs”. Consequently, the streets are full of jobless people; family discord and suicide are frequent.

The south Korean workers are on the crossroads of life or death.

Dear ten million workers!

This is no time to give way simply to sorrow. The current situation urgently requests the working class to turn out in the struggle against Lee Myung-bak.

The workers should sternly punish Lee and the conglomerates to make a new country free from capital oppression and to lead worthwhile life.

Take the lead in the struggle against Lee Myung-bak as a creator of history and driving force of the revolution.

Intensify the struggle against policy of Lee who drives the working people to death.

Continue the struggle until the higher wages, the abolition of part-time jobs, guarantee for working rights and reinstatement of the dismissed prove success.

Liquidation of the trade unions is tantamount to a declaration of war.

Turn out in the struggle against the Lee regime and vicious capitalists’ suppression against the working movement.

Dear fellow countrymen!

The death of Park Jong-tae requests the all the working peoples not only the working class to turn out in the struggle against Lee Myung-bak.

Lee’s evil policy shows no mercy to workers, peasants, youth and students, and intellectuals.

Many people fell to victim of anti-national misrule and were executed by barbarous fascist suppression.

The south Koreans should intensify a nationwide struggle to liquidate the treacherous Lee clique, a notorious fascist cutthroat.

The south Koreans from all social standings vehemently denounce the Lee regime that drove Park to death in a national meeting of the workers to be held on May 16 and are full of a determination to make the Lee regime pay dear for his death.

Make the forthcoming meeting, a place of punishment against Lee Myung-bak, by enlarging the struggle against Lee across south Korea.

Make south Korea full of voices against Lee by taking part in the meeting.

The strength is inexhaustible when the entire south Korean is united and the unity is able to smash any formidable forces.

Let us bring about a new country for the working people through the struggle that Park and the south Koreans wish, wiping out the Lee regime by the nationwide drive.

Rodong Sinmun on Reactionary Nature of Capitalist Society

Rodong Sinmun on Reactionary Nature of Capitalist Society

Pyongyang, November 22 (KCNA) -- What should be most strictly guarded against by those who value the sovereignty and dignity of each nation and want progress and prosperity is illusions about capitalism, Rodong Sinmun Sunday says in a signed article.

Capitalist society is not a "free, democratic and prosperous society," but it is the most reactionary and anti-popular society which ruthlessly tramples down the freedom and democratic rights of the overwhelming majority of working masses while spawning all sorts of socio-economic inequality and the ideological and moral poverty, the article says, and goes on:

The developed capitalist countries seem to be prosperous outwardly but are getting further corrupt from within due to the daily escalating contradictions. Its basic factor is the decadent material life, poor mental and cultural life and reactionary political life.

In capitalist society where exploitation and plunder by capital are getting evermore pronounced and the people are not allowed to be put under the state protection, it is impossible to expect the equality in material life no matter how much material wealth increases. The rich are steadily getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

The capitalist class massively spreads the reactionary and anti-popular idea and culture and the way of corrupt bourgeois life in a bid to benumb the independent ideological consciousness of the working masses, make the people meekly serve the capitalist system of exploitation and reduce them further into the slaves of money.

The escalated pauperization in mental and cultural life can never be deterred in those countries under the capitalist social system which is based on extreme selfishness and the almighty dollar principle and governed by the law of the jungle.

The imperialists and monopoly capitalists are enforcing the reactionary politics in a craftier way while more tightly taking hold of the state mechanism to keep their ruling system which is worsening day by day. On one hand they oppress and keep the working masses under their control by means of appeasement and deception and, on the other hand, fascistize the reactionary ruling mechanism and intensify the aggression and war policy.

For its anti-popular nature, the capitalist system can never tide over imbalance between the deformed material life and the mental and cultural life getting poorer and imbalance between the popular masses' growing demand for independence and the political life getting more reactionary.

Lee Group's Fascist Suppression of Union Leader Denounced

Lee Group's Fascist Suppression of Union Leader Denounced
Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The South Headquarters of the Pan-national Alliance for Korea's Reunification issued a statement on July 27 in denunciation of the puppet group's fascist suppression.

The statement recalled the Lee group's arrested Choe Sang Jae, chairman of the Press Trade Union, by invoking a fascist law, adding that this is lashing the people into great fury.

The repressive actions taken by the Lee regime and the "Grand National Party" against the people and the nation can never be tolerated, the statement held, stressing that the organization would wage a more dynamic struggle to force Lee to step down and the GNP disband itself.

The statement called on the people to wage a stubborn struggle to foil the conservative ruling forces' scheme to stay in power and the campaign to suppress the people and thus put a definite end to the dictatorship of Lee and the GNP.

Settlement of Crisis of Ssangyong Motor Co. Urged in S. Korea

Settlement of Crisis of Ssangyong Motor Co. Urged in S. Korea
Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- A "rally of workers from across south Korea calling for the settlement of the crisis of Ssangyong Motor Co." was held in Kyonggi Province of south Korea on July 25.

Present there were more than 10,000 unionists affiliated to the Confederation of Trade Unions from different parts of south Korea and members of civic and public organizations and opposition parties.

Speakers at the rally noted that the unionists of Ssangyong Motor Co. are staging the fierce struggle for their right to existence, getting ready for death while going on the strike.

Charging that the Lee Myung Bak group is making desperate efforts to kill the workers in the struggle en masse by mobilizing the police forces and gangsters, they stated that they would no longer allow the dictatorial "government" to trample down them.

The fascist police are staging a murderous drill there to commit the second Ryongsan tragedy, they pointed out, calling upon the people from all walks of life to fight in solidarity till the demands of the Ssangyong Motor unionists have been met.

After the rally, its participants staged a demonstration.

The fascist police made double and treble rings of more than 12,500 policemen of 117 companies and at least 100 combatant police buses in a bid to block up the workers' struggle, while creating an atmosphere of violent repression.

The demonstrators waged a sit-in strike, attempting to advance into the spot of the unionists' strike in defiance of the police suppression.

In another development, the families of the Ssangyong Motor unionists occupied the office of the "Grand National Party" in Youido, Seoul, on July 24 and entered a sit-in strike there.

White Paper on South Korean Economic Turmoil

White Paper on South Korean Economic Turmoil

The National Reunification Institute in a white paper released on April 29 decried the Lee Myong-bak group of traitors for turning south Korea into mayhem of economic bankruptcy and impoverishment of people.

Consisting of six parts including “The economy dependent on foreign monopoly capital”, “Nosediving economy, worst financial crisis” and “Snowballing debt, serious business bankruptcy”, it cited concrete facts to prove that this is entirely attributable to the group’s sycophancy, treachery and unpopular rule. It said:

The south Korean economy is a colonial and crippled one which cannot keep itself afloat without relying on others. It has got further deformed and increasingly dependent upon others since traitor Lee Myong-bak took power.

The Lee group of conservatives has offered everything of south Korea to the US under the signboard of giving priority to the south Korea-US alliance since the very day of its seizure of power, making south Korea fall victim to the US policy of aggression and plunder not only in political and military fields but in the economy.

No sooner had he come to power than he visited the US to beg it to conclude FTA. He did not hesitate to commit such treachery as opening the south Korean market to the American beef prone to the mad cow disease to please his master.

Not content with this, the Lee clan cracked down on the protest actions of the south Korean people against the beef import.

The clan recklessly introduced foreign monopoly capital, turning south Korea into a stage of activity and heaven of monopoly capitalists.

They are holding sway over the south Korean economy to meet their interests, holding 30% of its stock market and more than 60% of stocks in the banking business, in particular.

They rake up huge profits every year including billions of US dollars in the name of stock dividend.

Styling himself “economic president”, Lee bragged that he would deliver the economy out of crisis and bring about rapid growth during the tenure of his office and thus make south Korea an economically developed nation in a decade to come. But the reality shows that he pushed the economy to stagnation.

Last year the economic growth rate slumped, recording the lowest level since 1998. This year it is expected to be minus 2.4%.

Export which is claimed to be the lifeline of the south Korean economy is rapidly declining.

It decreased by 18% in November and 17% in December last year as compared with the same months in the previous year.

January this year witnessed a 33% decrease in export, an all-time low since statistics of exports were collected in 1967. The decline in export sharply increased trade deficit, exceeding US$ 13 billion for the first time in recent decade.

Public consumption and investment in equipment experienced a slump.

The growth rate in consumption decreased from 5.1% in 2007 to 0.9% last year and the rate of increase in investment in equipment from 7.6% to minus figure.

Stock market is in chaos.

South Korea is so heavily saddled with foreign debts which need to be redeemed urgently that the economy will go totally bankrupt if they are paid at one time.

The liabilities of businesses increased by 22% late last year as against the precious year, amounting to US$ 1.155 trillion.

The debts of the 10 big businesses more than doubled in a year.

Businesses are becoming insolvent and those that survived are carrying out restructuring, leaving a great number of workers jobless.

The unemployed increased by over 500, 000 for a year, reaching some 3.5 million, or a record high since 1998.

The gap between the rich and the poor has widened and the people have been further impoverished since the group of conservatives came to power.

Some 3.59 million people of 1.91 million families are unable to earn the minimum cost of living and 180, 000 people of 70, 000 families are destitute and need emergency aid.

Housing shortage is getting worse.

Homeless families amount to over 7 million, 45% of all the families.

Prices and taxes are skyrocketing.

This year has witnessed a ceaseless price hike.

In February, consumer price increased by 4.1% and food price by 70% at the maximum. Such price growth rate is seven times as much as that in capitalist countries.

South Korea has earned ill fame not only as a den of criminals but as the land plagued with suicide.

On a daily average 36 people kill themselves under the pressure of business bankruptcy, difficult living conditions and debt.

Suicides per 100, 000 people numbered 21.5 last year, a world record, and 7% of total population amounting to some 3.4 million people are said to have an urge to suicide.

The majority of people are suffering from the serious economic downturn and destitution while a small handful of rulers and their clans are wallowing in luxury, accumulating wealth through corruption and irregularities.

Lee Myong-bak is the kingpin of scandals who amassed wealth with all sorts of fraudulence and bribed his way to presidency.

After he took office a series of scandals committed by his clan were brought to light including the suspicion of bribery by his sister-in-law, the abusive exercise of power by his brother, the irregular fund-raising by his-in-laws and the fabrication of stock price by his son-in-law.

A permanent advisor to the Grand National Party (GNP) that earned notoriety as the supporter of fraud and irregularities and the grabber of truckloads of money took a colossal sum of money from a computer manufacturer in return for the promise of a preference for war supplies order. Civil servants at the levels of deputy minister and department director forged documents as if they did farming to obtain much money.

Brass hats took bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from businesses and purchased contaminated food to supply it to soldiers and seized millions of dollars of demobilization money.

According to information published by the officeholder ethics committee, two thirds of lawmakers increased their wealth in spite of the serious economic crisis last year and eight out of ten top amassers were GNP parliamentarians.

One out of four parliamentarians owns immovables worth millions of dollars, and the first sixteen are all GNP members, and the first thirty, except some, also belong to the GNP.

To the consternation of all, Lee’s wealth increased by US$ 440, 000 although he brought about economic bankruptcy and impoverishment to the people.

The Lee clan can neither evade responsibility for having pushed the south Korean economy and the people's livelihood to catastrophe nor escape the stern punishment of history and the nation for their treachery and crimes against the people

National Meeting Marks May Day

National Meeting Marks May Day
Pyongyang, April 30 (KCNA) -- A national meeting was held at the People's Palace of Culture Thursday to mark the 119th May Day.

Attending it were Kim Jung Rin, Yang Hyong Sop, the chairperson of a friendly party, leading officials of working people's organizations, officials of ministries and national institutions, labor innovators and working people in the city of Pyongyang.

Yang Hyong Sop, alternate member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and vice-president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, made a report at the meeting.

The reporter said that May Day is a significant holiday as it offers an occasion for strikingly manifesting the revolutionary spirit and the militant might of the Korean working people all over the world and their international solidarity and unity with the workers the world over.

The popular masses' struggle for independence and socialism against imperialism was arduous and difficult but the Korean people could creditably discharge their mission and duty in the sacred struggle to victoriously advance the revolutionary cause of Juche, the socialist cause as they have been guided by the peerlessly great men, he noted.

President Kim Il Sung carved out a new path of revolution for realizing independence of popular masses under the banner of the Juche idea, the Songun idea and aroused the inexhaustible strength of the popular masses including workers, peasants and intellectuals, thus leading the revolution and construction to shining victory, the reporter said, and continued:

The leadership exploits of the President have been given a steady continuity thanks to General Secretary Kim Jong Il, who put forward the workers, peasants and intellectuals as the driving forces of the revolution and has led the popular masses' cause of independence, the socialist cause to victory only.

The annals of the Korean revolution are shining with undying feats of the workers and other working people who have devotedly worked for the country and the revolution true to the leadership of the party and the leader.

The Korean working people will strikingly demonstrate their heroic stamina as socialist workers, true to the Songun leadership of Kim Jong Il and thus fling open the gate to a great prosperous and powerful nation in 2012, the centenary of birth of the President, and get the fireworks of victory displayed in the blue sky over the country.

Referring to the grave difficulties lying in the way of national reunification due to the reckless moves for a war of aggression against the DPRK on the part of the U.S. and the south Korean conservative ruling forces, the reporter stressed the need for all the Koreans to resolutely foil the outsiders' interference and the anti-reunification forces' confrontational moves under the banner of the June 15 joint declaration and the October 4 declaration and bring about a decisive turn in the national reunification movement.

The working people in the DPRK will as ever discharge their historic mission in protecting the world peace and security and stepping up the human cause of independence and further strengthen the international solidarity with working peoples the world over in the idea of independence, peace and friendship, the reporter declared.

Living Conditions of South Korean People in 2008

Living Conditions of South Korean People in 2008

The people's living conditions in south Korea are recently getting worse owing to the treacherous economic policy of the Lee Myung-bak clan and the aftermath of the catastrophic economic crisis.

- Income imbalance widened and household debt augmented

Since the Lee group clings to the pro-big business policy despite the decrease of the real income of the south Korean lower income brackets, the income gap between the high and low income brackets widened 8.41 times in the first quarter of 2008 alone, the worst record. It was 7.75 times in 2004, 8.29 times in 2005, 8.36 times in 2006 and 8.4 times in 2007.

In the meantime, the household debt increased to 39.6 million won as of late June 2008, 10 % more than that of 2006 (36.01 million won) due to the economic stagnation.

- Tax burden increases and prices skyrocket

In 2008 tax burden per capita increased to 4.36 million won, the largest ever. If some 130 miscellaneous taxes excluded from the taxation statistics are included, the rate of total tax burden against the Gross Domestic Product is 32.1%, far higher than that of the average (26.9%) of the OECD member states.

Mass media and pundits assert that the south Korean people are forced to pay more than a third of their annual income as various taxes and miscellaneous levies, rebuking it as a “Kingdom of tax”.

Meanwhile, the consumer prices rose by 5.9% higher in August 2008 than in August 2007, and in particular, the subsistence prices including the foodstuff needed en masse in daily life rose by 6.6%, owing to the price jump of raw materials including petroleum in international markets.

As a result the people are lamenting their lot saying that they hardly eke out under the lethal bomb of price denouncing the regime which vociferated about controlling the price but molests the commoners.

- The jobless steeply increased

At present the jobless are numbered 3.37 million, 14 % of economic manpower, and among them university-graduated high intellectual unemployed are roughly 2.57 million.

If the irregular jobholders (daily employees and temporary workers) are added, the actual unemployed are no less than 11.97 million.

- Middle class and medium and small-size businessmen go to ruin

The portion of the middle class, once called a pivotal force in society, was 68.6% of all the households in 1996, but dropped to 57.6% now.

11 % of the households were estranged from the middle class for the past 13 years, and 70% of them were reduced to the poor, so that the poor class increased to over 18% of all households now from 11.3% of 1996.

Now medium and small-size businesses are numbered about 3 million, assuming 99% of all businesses, but only in the first half of 2008 some 5 000 medium and small-size businesses went bankrupt, so their situations are getting more miserable.

Besides, because of the world-highest educational expenses a great number of students quit schools or earn the tuition fees by working at a part-time job.

All sorts of diseases including tuberculosis are rampant due to the economic hardship and deteriorated living environment, increasing number of despaired people commit suicide, and murder, robbery and other heinous crimes are sharply prevailing.

Mass media censure that south Korea is a “land of disease”, “republic of suicide” and “kingdom of crime”.

Now the people from all works of life are out in anti-regime struggle upholding such slogans as “Drop the policy for only 1% wealthy people at once” and “We want to live in a country guaranteeing the human treatment”, urging the Lee Myung-bak clique to step down now holding accountable for the ruin of the economy and people's living.
